Frequently Asked Questions

What is this crazy tournament?
Bosom Buddies is similar to a regular dart tournament, but players in scuba gear compete head to head by throwing Toypedos (yea, those little rocket-shaped toys) at an underwater target across a pool. The funding comes from contributions secured by tournament players (like a typical walk-a-thon) who compete for donated prizes. Everyone has fun meeting fellow divers while perfecting the lost art of underwater darts. Anyone can play novice or master diver. And, anyone can win!

What kind of time does it take?
The entire fundraising process takes about 2 hours a week over a two to three month period - from your initial donor mailers to your final thank you notes. Youšll need to build some simple dart targets from PVC pipe (instructions below). The actual tournament takes place over one weekend. A typical tournament round of 8 players takes about an hour.

How many tournament players do we need?
A weekend tournament works well with from 48 to 64 players. However, less players will work and no one should be turned away. Go for 100!  Bosom Buddies often attracts new scuba divers. Be ready to do some 'Discover Scuba' lessons before the tourney.

When does the Bosom Buddies tournament take place?
We hold this annual event in October - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We encourage other dive stores to hold a tournament in October for greater community awareness, a more receptive media, and a chance for us all to make a big collective splash. But, you can hold your own tournament any time of the year.

Do we have to donate funds exclusively to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation?
No, but we do ask that the proceeds from your Bosom Buddies tournament are contributed to breast cancer research. The Susan G. Komen foundation comes to us highly recommended by the medical community and breast cancer survivors.

How many staff or volunteers are needed?
You need about 3 to 4 volunteer tournament officials to keep things moving along, including two underwater scorekeepers.

How much does it cost?
The overhead is minimal. Entry fees can cover some of your initial 'start up' costs, including targets and Toypedos.

What is a typical entry fee?
We ask participants to pay an entry fee of $15 for the tournament,
and ask them to raise additional donations from family and friends (ie. like a walk-a-thon).
